Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal and is associated with symptoms of back pain, stiffness, numbness, etc.

1000 B.C

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis was found in Egyptian Mummies

1887

The first laminectomy was performed by Victor Alexander Haden Horsley, a professor of Surgery at University College London

1893

Surgeon Arbuthnot Lane decompressed a lumbar spine with relief (laminectomy)

1899

Dr. Sachs & Dr. Fraenckel documented the findings of a patient with forward stoop, pain in the legs with paresthesia (Neurogenic Claudication).  The symptoms improved after 2 level laminectomy.

Present

Laminectomy is one of the mainstays of spinal surgery.
